As exciting as going on an adventure to the other side of the world can be, what you take on the plane is also something you should consider. The flight to Australia from the UK, for example, can be 22 hours long or more depending on stopovers. Having some essentials on the plane is the key to enjoying yourself and not going insane with boredom or an uncomfortable sleep. Here’s a look at all the carry on essentials for long haul flights you should consider.
Travel Comfort
A Good Travel Pillow
Most long-haul flights will offer you a blanket and pillow so you can get some rest. Even though the blankets are more than suitable, travel pillows from the airport never seem to offer a suitable level of comfort. Buy an engineered travelling pillow that is proven to give you a much better experience whilst in a car, plane or train. They’re usually much smaller than the generic U-shape pillows too.
Travel Socks / Slippers
Getting a pair of good travel socks is also a good way to stay comfortable. Flight socks are designed to help prevent DVT. Or take some hotel style slippers with you. (Not big fluffy bunny rabbit ones!) Changing into them on the plane means you can take your shoes off and not have to worry about putting them back on for the duration of the flight.
Entertainment
Take a Good Book
Also, picking out a good book you’ve been meaning to read is a great way to pass time. I find travelling is the best time to read as I tend to indulge in the details of the book much more because of the lack of distractions. I recommend buying your book at the airport. It might be slightly more expensive than elsewhere but browsing books is a great way to pass some time.
Download Some Games
Relying on movies and TV shows on the plane can be a risky choice. Although the entertainment provided on planes is fairly good these days, you might just get a bit sick of watching the TV. Taking a tablet and downloading a few games you’re interested in is a good way to keep your brain stimulated and has a much better chance of keeping you from feeling restless in your seat.
Health & Wellbeing
Painkillers
A headache or stomach pain can make long haul flights seem a lot longer. Having something to numb the pain that you can trust to work is always helpful.
Eye Mask / Ear Plugs
Consider these some ‘Sleeping Essentials’. Items to consider if you struggle to sleep on a plane would be earplugs and an eye mask. You still might not have a deep sleep but at least with them you’ll filter out the rest of the plane whilst you doze off.
Toothpaste / Moisturiser / Face Wash
Usually, they’re complimentary on modern journeys, but having some moisturiser and toothpaste on the flight will make you feel more comfortable when you wake up. Just remember to take the travel sizes so you’re allowed to take them on the plane. Face Wipes are a good alternative to take rather than a face wash. After sleeping on the plane and before you get off you’ll feel so much better after freshening up.
Bonus Tip: Dress sensibly
It’s nice to look good in the airport, but just remember the length of the flight. Do you really want to be wearing skinny jeans on a 2 day flight? Probably not. Fitted joggers, a light hoodie and some comfy trainers are the best approaches. You know what you’re most comfortable in, just don’t let the excitement of Australia cloud your judgement.
