Most people visit Rotorua because of it's famous spas, hot pools and geysers (and for all the Maori culture you can experience there too), but did you know there is a Redwood forest located just five minutes from Rotorua city? If you love the oudoors then this area will be special for you.
The Whakarewarewa Forest is an important feature of the Rotorua landscape providing an exquisite backdrop to Rotorua city, it's also one of the movie locations for The Forbidden Forest in the Harry Potter film.
When I stood in the The Redwoods Forest, surrounded by all of the plants, watching the sunshine go through the tops of the trees, walking through the wood across the grass I took a deep breath to get the most pure air ever, and I felt like I could hear my heart beat more clearly, I really felt energetic and full of passion.
You can spend the whole day here, just walking through the forest, singing with the birds, enjoying the sunshine and exploring how amazing the nature is. There are seven different walks you can follow, all taking a different length of time, from 30 minutes to 8 hours.
Or you could rent a bike to go further into the forest and refresh your spirit. What is more, you can walk your dogs and even ride a horse in the Redwoods.
Also, if you're a bit more prepared than I was there are some fabulous picnic areas for you to have a nice laidback lunch in stunning surroundings!
There are lots of kind of plants you can see. Out of 170 different tree species, Radiata Pine and Monterey Pine have adapted to the conditions well, they've now become the most popular trees in New Zealand. There are also many birds and insects that you can see and hear, if you are a fan of nature and animals.
Before I visited The Redwoods (Whakarewarewa Forest) I never thought that I could feel so close with nature. This place corresponded with all my imaginings for nature and vitality. If you're feeling pressure from your daily life or work, or if you just want to soak in the atmosphere and connect with nature, definitely make sure you spend a morning there.
It's really easy to get there, just drive 5 minutes from Rotorua City towards the direction of the airport and follow the signposts.
