Bucks trips come in all shapes and sizes. During our time planning and running stag parties, we’ve seen just about every theme, style, destination and budget that you could imagine. While every party might look different, there is one thing they all share in common though – bucks party accommodation. And most party-goers will opt for a hostel as the budget accommodation option of choice. We reckon we’ve cracked the code to picking the perfect hostel for any bucks or stag do. When it comes time for you to find a hostel for the lads to stay at while you celebrate your mate’s final days of freedom, here’s our advice on what you should consider.

Five tips to choosing a hostel for your bucks and stag do

1. Cheaper is not always better

We get it – money matters.  When most people think of a hostel, they think about the savings they’re making by not staying at a 5-star hotel or renting out an entire place just for their gang. Anyone venturing on a stag holiday is also more likely to pick the budget accommodation option because it means they’re left with more dollars to spend on the fun stuff – bucks activities, drinks, transport, food and the late-night entertainment.

However, don’t try to save a buck just to save a buck. After all, you generally get what you pay for. We can practically guarantee that your days will be packed to the brim with activities and excitement, so it’s more important to have somewhere that you can retreat each night and recharge your batteries for the next day than it is to save a few dollars. We recommend paying a little extra for a nicer, cleaner and all-round-better joint. You and your body can thank us later.

2. Get the late check out

Anyone that thinks they can get themselves up, ready and checked out by 10 am after a big night out for their mate’s bucks party, has obviously never been to one before. The chances of you having a huge bucks night out on the town are pretty close to 100%, and that means you’re going to be feeling a little dusty the next morning. Even if cracking into the cold beers and cutting shapes on the dance floor isn’t your thing, you’ll probably still stay up way past your usual bedtime throwing banter and just enjoying each others’ company.

The best bucks hostels have 11 am checkout times, and the really, really good ones might even let you hang around until midday.  If late check out isn’t a standard option at your hostel of choice, some places might charge you a few more dollars to score yourself some extra hours, but it’s definitely worth the investment. Hostels with later checkout times are usually much more relaxed, and chiller too, and that vibe will set the tone for an epic stag do.

3. Free internet

This bucks party or stag party might be a rare chance for you to get away with the boys, but we can guarantee that you’re going to need a little breathing space at some point on the trip. Cue: a Netflix session in your hostel bed for an hour or two. It might seem like a bit of a no brainer, right? BYO phone, hook it up to the wifi, and you’re ready to pick up where you left off with your Suits marathon? Well, you might be surprised to discover just how many hostels around the world still charge for the internet, or even worse, don’t offer internet access at all.

Our top tip is always to score yourself a hostel that offers free wifi so that you can surf the ‘net without a second thought. It’s also great to have this option as it makes it much easier to stay in touch with the lads while you’re away with your group chat messages. Being able to chat to the boys at all times means that you can ensure everyone is where they’re meant to be, when they’re meant to be there. If there are costs involved with using the wifi, make sure you’re aware of the prices from the get-go as some places can hand out some pretty steep bills.

4. Lockers

We’re not saying that hostels are unsafe, but it’s always great to have somewhere to lock up your valuables – especially if you’re staying in a dorm with other guests. You would think that lockers are a standard feature of most joints these days, but there are plenty of places that either don’t offer any type of security or that charge bachelor weekend for you to use the facilities.

If you travel with electronics (let’s face it, who doesn’t?), we recommend picking somewhere that offers complimentary lockers for every guest. An easy way to check out if your hostel does is to scroll through its online reviews to see what other people have had to say. Lockers and general security are always commonly discussed topics among travellers across the world, so you’re practically guaranteed to find an answer this way.

Nomads will provide whole dorms for your stag do so that you don’t have to share your space with other guests, lockers are still available however.

5. Location, location, location

Picking a hostel is just like buying a house – Location is key. It’s all very well and good to have a fandango place to rest your head at the end of the day, but if you’re spending hours on the bus every time you want to go anywhere, you won’t actually have an opportunity to enjoy it.

The best hostels are close to the action, so that you can step out of your door and into the middle of everything. Or the hostel is so remote that just being there is an experience in itself. But if it’s simply on the outskirts of town, well that’s just downright annoying.

Nomads have hostels that are perfect for Bucks and Stag do’s all over Australia and New Zealand.
