Sunday the 22nd of May I woke up to a clear blue sky and a sun drenched Byron Bay. I changed into my swimmers, made some breakfast, grabbed a coffee at Barefoot Roasters, and slowly walked to the Jonson St Bus Stop for my 12:20pm pick up to go surfing with Mojo Surf Byron Bay.
I've surfed in quite a few places. I learned how to surf in Tofino, Canada, surfed the waves in Lima Peru, Acapulco Mexico and explored the surf culture in Bali, Indonesia. That being said, being a semi-beginner surfer, nothing could prepare me for the waves in Australia. The tides and currents are way more aggressive than anywhere I have ever surfed before, and for the whole time since I have been here, I’ve surfed with locals and felt so discouraged when I could not surf to their level.
As a traveler I heard Mojo Surf was the best surf school in Australia, (now working at Mad Travel I know that's true) but I always hesitated booking a surf lesson when I felt I had already learned how to surf enough to go on my own... I was wrong! Surfing is not just about the technique, a massive part of surfing is learning how to read the waves and the tides.
Becoming a surfer may not necessarily happen with a couple of lessons, it may not even happen with a couple of months or years. Going on your own is a great way to get out into the water and to get inspired by other board riders, that being said, the surf lesson I had with Mojo Surf helped me acquire the skills to best understand the surf conditions by observing the waves and tides for ocean safety.
Mojo Surf caters for all levels of surfers. It's for the people who have never been in the ocean their whole lives to the people confident enough to be a surf instructor themselves. Arriving onto the Mojo Surf bus I was greeted by Hannah and Fiona, two vibrant girls extremely stoked to take us out surfing in Byron Bay and I immediately felt welcome. While we were waiting for more people to show up we all introduced ourselves and got to know each other a bit. Everyone became friends within just 10 minutes of being on the bus together!
On the bus we were informed of our location for the surf lesson which was Lennox Heads. Mojo Surf consistently hold their surf lessons in epic locations without the crazy crowds. Living in Byron Bay, without a car, it's difficult to get to these surf spots, so I felt really fortunate to get out of the main crowded beaches and surf somewhere entirely new.
Hopping off the bus we all got our rashies and surf boards (included in the price). At the beach we did a quick run and stretches to warm up, we talked about the swell and what the surf conditions were like. We got split into three groups, based on experience. I got to work with the lovely Fiona who was so unbelievably excited and happy to teach us all how to surf. Before getting in the water she reminded us to share the stoke which means that when someone catches a wave to get excited for them and yell, “YEWWW!” to show your support.
I didn't notice how much of a difference this made until I started catching and riding waves while everyone else in the water would yell, “YEWWW!” and throw shakas left right and center. It made me feel so good and the satisfaction of catching the wave that much better.
Working as a Mad Travel Agent I'm constantly booking Mojo Surf Lessons for clients and now that I've finally been on one I can confidently recommend them to anybody and everybody who wants to surf.
I felt fully looked after by all of the staff who were so happy to be there and clearly love what they do. I have so much respect for the team at Mojo Surf, who started out as Nat and Dan, two passionate surfer dudes taking people surfing along the coast from Sydney to Byron Bay... which has now expanded to other epic locations in Australia like the one of a kind Spot X, Australia’s only direct beachfront surf camp, as well as New Zealand and Indonesia.
Always on my mind while I’m out in the water with my surfboard is just an overwhelming amount of gratitude to live by the ocean. Mojo Surf shares this feeling at every single one of their surf adventures... so what are you waiting for?
Byron Bay is a very popular location to learn to surf. Mojo Surf Australia have loads of surf tours and activities on offer, including 5 day trips, 2 to 3 day getaways from Byron Bay and trips from Sydney too, including 1 day Surf Trips.
