Byron Bay has a fantastic climate all year round, it also has world class beaches, fabulous activities, amazing shops and cafes, quirky people and it is the most Easterly point of Australia. So it is easy to get out of bed and start your day the right way!
1. Sunrise at Cape Byron
Being the most Easterly point in Australia gives Byron the advantage of seeing the sun come up first. Don’t miss the opportunity to walk to the famous Byron Bay lighthouse and watch the sun come up. It is only 45 minutes’ walk from the centre of town (or 5 minutes’ drive if you are way too lazy!) Get organised and take a picnic breakfast, a rug and don’t forget your camera. Sunrise here is a spectacular display.
2. Breakfast at a local cafe
It could be argued that this is the best meal of the day in Byron Bay. You will be spoiled for choice! Try Fish Heads right on the sand at main beach or the newly refurbished Fresh has a fabulous menu. Bay Leaf caters to locals and is located right in the centre of town. You might like to go for an adventure and take it up to Harvest at Newrybar; this award winning restaurant offers fabulous food, a great location and a little bit of adventure to start your day.
3. Yoga
Byron Bay is one of the best places in Australia to take a Yoga class. There are a number of options from beginners classes to full on yoga retreats. You can take a chilled out class on the beach, or choose from about 15 different options operating in Byron Bay at convenient locations. If you are a guest at the Arts Factory Lodge, there are yoga classes on offer most days for a small donation of $5.00. They cater for every level and it is an outdoor class, so you get to commune with nature as well.
4. Surf
Early morning surfing is a great way to start the day. This is how most of the locals start their day! There are some great breaks in Byron; from beginners getting a wave on your long board at the Pass, right up to something gnarly at Tallows or the Wreck. If you are not already surfing on your Aussie adventure, ask us how at your friendly Mad Travel desk, they will sort you out with a lesson or two.
5. The Farmers Market
If you are in Byron Bay on a Thursday, don’t miss the opportunity to visit our local produce market. There are home grown flowers, fruit & vegetables, local meat & seafood, fresh baked breads & pastries, locally grown coffee brewed & sold to take home, buskers, colourful characters and a really great local vibe! Check out all the Byron Bay markets here.
However you choose to start your day in beautiful Byron Bay, there is one thing you cannot do… have a sleep in! Maybe it’s because it’s the first place on mainland Australia that the sun kisses, maybe it is because there is the choice of that fabulous ocean, or the chance to get up and get at it… whatever tickles your fancy! Make sure you are there to witness sunrise at Cape Byron before the rest of Australia.
Enjoy the start to your day in fabulous Byron Bay!
