Backpackers need cheap drinks, or pretty much cheap anything while they’re travelling around the world and Auckland is no different. We must remember that not everyone can be a ‘flashpacker‘ and New Zealand (especially Auckland) is relatively expensive (compared to S E Asia!) and so here is a helping hand for backpackers… The best bars in Auckland to get cheap drinks are…
*Please note that there are strict laws regarding the promotion of drinks specials or drink discounts in New Zealand. Licensed premises are allowed to advertise all their specials inside the bars but not outside. So although good drink specials and Happy Hours exist in many Auckland bars we’re not able to promote them all here.
Best Bars Auckland
(for cheap drinks)
Provedor can be found just before the main part of Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. Provedor has some amazing drink deals. It’s well worth a visit and it’a also a good viewing point to watch some of the big cruise ships coming and going.
2. Cassette Nine
Pop Panic at Cassette Nine happens every Tuesday night and starts at 9pm, you’ll get a free drink on arrival as well as some great tunes being played all night (all your favourite pop hits from the last few decades) you can get some pretty sweet drink deals too, some tasty nibbles for a bargain price and even a chance to win some travel prizes in their Riff Raffle. Cassette Nine is just a short walk from Fort Street on Vulcan Lane, upstairs.
3. Spitting Feathers
Spitting Feathers is an English bar in the heart of the city on Wyndham Street. They have drink and food specials available, make sure to check out Thirsty Thursday! They also do an amazing traditional Sunday Roast (on Sunday’s, of course ha). The Spitting Feathers is another pub that is upstairs (like Cassette Nine) so sometimes you can walk past the entrance if there isn’t the usual queue outside, it gets a whole range of people visiting, from suits to backpackers looking for their bargain drinks!
4. The Mexican Cafe
A fantastic place to get good value mexican food, The Mexican Cafe also has a great Happy Hour between 5pm and 7pm. Get drink specials such as cheap margeritas and dirt cheap house wine or beers. This is one of my favourite places to get a bite to eat, made all the better with the early evening drink specials!
5. The Bluestone Room
Hidden away on Durham Lane (parallel to Queen Street) you’ll find this popular bar. Pop in from 5pm to 6pm (or 5pm to 7pm on Fridays) for lots of drink specials.
6. Northern Steamship
This is not necessarily one of the cheapest bars in Auckland but it’s definitely one with a lot of character. And it’s just round the corner from Nomads Auckland. Lot’s of comfy chairs, more lampshades than you’ve ever seen in one place before and a dance floor for later in the night makes this a bar worth a visit.
7. The Camel Bar
The Camel Bar is located just a few doors down from Nomads Auckland and is your typical backpackers bar. Silly games, drink specials and lot’s of friendly backpackers make for a good place to start your evening.
8. Frenzi Bar Crawl
Not just one bar but four! On the weekly Frenzi Bar Crawl the guys will take you to 4 bars in Auckland which you may not have been to before and it starts at The Camel Bar at 8pm – find out more about the Frenzi Bar and The Big Night Out Auckland Bar Crawls.
9 and 10. Base Auckland Bars
Now, I’m also going to give a special mention to Habana Joes and Hello Sunshine both found at Base Auckland. They have various specials all day every day, and nice long Happy Hours. Hello Sunshine – 3 until 6pm every day, Habana Joes – 8 until 10pm every day. During Happy Hour you can get $5 Export Gold & $5 House Spirits (Vodka, bourbon, gin, rum, whisky and tequila).
Hopefully we have helped point you in the right direction to find the best bars in Auckland for cheap drinks. For further advice about cheap drinks, come and have a chat with the guys at Nomads Auckland, the staff like a drink or two!
