Airlie Beach is known as the gateway to the beautiful Whitsunday Islands; the most talked about of Australia’s famous islands. Most people come to Airlie Beach for one night before their trip, hop on the boats and then head off to their next destination when they get back onto land. Well what about all the other amazing things that people are missing out on?

Airlie Beach has so much more to do than Whitsunday Sailing Trips. It’s certainly worth spending a day or two either side of your Whitsundays Trip to get exploring everything else the area has to offer.

Here are 3 hidden wonders I would recommend everyone to check out when visiting Airlie Beach.

1. Cedar Creek Falls

Located about 20 minutes outside of Airlie Beach, Cedar Creek Falls are definitely one of the hidden wonders of the Whitsunday region.

This peaceful and secluded waterfall offers a fantastic natural swimming hole to be enjoyed all year round. The wet season however, is certainly the best time to see the waterfall in all its glory. Cedar Creek is a great spot to chill out and enjoy the sun. I recommend taking lunch with you and following the short bush trail to the top of the waterfalls to enjoy the beautiful view. This view really is not one to be missed.

Sometimes if you are lucky enough you will be joined by wild turtles so, if you have some, make sure you pack your snorkelling gear.

2. Hideaway bay

Australia is well known for its beautiful beaches and scenery and let me tell you this beach will not disappoint. A short 30 – 40 minutes drive outside of Airlie Beach will lead you to one of Airlie Beach’s best kept secrets.

Hideaway Bay is perfect for those wanting to escape the backpacking scene for a few hours. Enjoy some breathtaking scenery and that all important tanning time.

There are a number of small cafe’s and shops up there so don’t worry about taking your own food. Also located on the beach front are a number of BBQ’s that you are free to use. Just make sure you clean up after yourself!

Why not spend the day chilling on the beach and fire up the BBQ as the sun is setting?

3. Dingo Beach

Located just south of Hideaway Bay, Dingo Beach is also worth a visit. Because of the location of the two beaches you could spend the morning at Hideaway and afternoon at Dingo.

Dingo Beach also has the added bonus of having a pub located right on the beach front. After a hard day of sunbathing and relaxing, a cold beer might be just what the doctor ordered. The seafood also comes very highly recommended and let’s be honest, the seafood is as fresh as it gets.

For information on any of these locations or for directions and maps on how to get there come give us at shout at Nomads Airlie Beach. When your friends ask you how your stay in Airlie Beach was you will now have so much more to tell me them about than just your awesome Whitsundays Trip.

  1. We didn’t find any shops or facilities at hideaway bay. But did picnic on the one set of chairs we found. Lovely place.
Further up Gloucester point, but the sign saying private beach access turned us away so we missed seeing the reputedly lovely pub. Their signage ‘ no you’re not lost, keep going, on the dirt road is an excellent reminder of good Australian humour, it’s so accurate but the way it’s said is worthy of a chuckle.
Dingo bay, lovely iconic pub with ground floor and backing onto the beach.
Confirm, laze at hideaway bay, rehydrate at dingo beach.
Cedar falls, essential to take ‘bug off,, aka insect repellent.

  2. Hi there. Just wanted to say that after trawling the net , coming across your article, and heading to cedar falls, we realised that we were onto a winner. Thanks so much for this. It was so refreshing for us aussies stuck in Airlie Beach with all the tourists. We headed to the two pubs you mention and I loved both. Again, thank you so much for showing us a lovely time.
