There are two things every traveller must experience in Australia. The first is heading to one of the many golden beaches to enjoy the surf and sunshine. The second is to head to an open area where you can cook up a feast on the barbecue. You’ll find free to use barbecues all over Australia because having a BBQ is a national pastime. However, if you can hire a car, you can find some of the best Queensland beach BBQ’s that Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast have to offer.

Queensland Beach BBQ’s

1. Main beach – Gold Coast

Main beach is located a few kilometres north of Surfers Paradise. It’s located in an area opposite high rise apartment blocks, but it has a nice open park area with several barbecue areas and toilets. You can find people from all different backgrounds setting up their barbecue spots and sizzling up a cuisine to die for.

The barbecue areas are clean and the shores of the beach are located less than 100m away. Main beach also has good surf breaks, so if you want to bring along your bodyboard, you can ride a few waves while you are there.

The other good thing about this beach is that it is patrolled by the surf lifesavers. So as long as you stay in between the flags, you will be safe.

2. Alexandra Headlands

This is a beautiful, but underrated, beach on Queensland’s east coast. If you can get there during the middle of the week, you can have a lot of open space to yourself. There is a skate park, barbecue areas and a mini park for the kids. The area also supplies free wi-fi, which is provided by the local council.

The beach in front of the surf lifesavers club is patrolled and if you go earlier in the morning, you should be treated to nice wave breaks and clear water.

3. Bribie Island

Bribie Island is located approximately 50 minutes north of Brisbane and is actually a good fishing spot. So if you want to have the combination of sun, sand, fishing and barbecuing, then this is one of the locations that you should take advantage of.

On the Pumicestone passage side, there are several barbecue areas and fishing spots by the bridge. There is a mini beach around there as well. Alternatively, you can make your way to the surf side and enjoy a barbecue there before heading into the water for a swim.

4. Caloundra

Caloundra is approximately 10 minutes south from Mooloolaba and has great barbecue spots overlooking the water. There are nice walking trails that go along the coastline, as well as open areas for playing activities such as cricket. The beach itself is nice, but small. You will be treated to epic views and you can participate in watersports such as jet skiing.

Free wifi is also provided by the local council in this area.

5. Southbank Parklands (Man-made beach)

This is an artificial beach, but the backdrop and what you can do when enjoying yourself there is pretty epic. There is a free beach which is also adjacent to a free swimming pool. It also overlooks the Brisbane river and is open until quite late, so you can actually do a barbecue and swim by twilight.
