Ever fancied learning to surf? Well the Noosa Festival of Surfing is coming up and this year, for the first time, they're running the 'Ultimate backpacker challenge'. Backpackers will complete a crash course in surfing on their way to Noosa on a Mojo Surf Tour, then they'll be competing in front of a packed opening weekend at the worlds biggest surfing event, the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing.
Are you brave enough to take part?
The ultimate backpacker challenge - more details
The Mojo Surf Backpacker Challenge, presented by Nomads will be a world first. With ever greater numbers of backpackers visiting Noosa to learn to surf, the festival has joined forces with Mojo Surf and Nomads to throw down the ultimate challenge. Competitors must have had no previous experience in surfing. They will complete a crash course en route to Noosa on a Mojo Surf tour, then they will be thrown in at the deep end, competing in front of a packed opening weekend gallery at the world’s biggest surfing event (500 competitors), the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Jeep.
Expect thrills and spills and plenty of selfies for the folks back home in Munich or Tokyo. But there is a more serious aspect to the event. “We want backpacker tourists to feel a part of the festival,” said director Phil Jarratt, “But we also want to emphasise how important it is for them to actually learn the basics before heading out to crowded point breaks. As well as the basic skills, they will learn water safety and surf etiquette over an intensive training course.” Don't worry, tricks like tandem surfing shown below are not expected!
The challenge is open to anyone who has never ridden a surfboard before. Imagine the thrill of being able to say: “I learnt to surf on the best waves in Australia and won the right to compete in front of thousands of screaming fans at the Noosa Festival of Surfing!” Pure gold.
First round eliminations of the Challenge will be held on Saturday, March 8, with the best performers going through to the Sunday final, held in front of a maximum crowd just before the Festival’s traditional Hawaiian opening ceremony. The social aspects of the festival are centred on our festival village and beach bar and stage at First Point, Noosa. This tent village incorporates a surf product expo, food outlets, licensed bar and other attractions, with free live music and surf movies presented nightly.
Even if you aren't involved in the 'ultimate backpacker challenge', the Noosa Festival of Surfing is centred around surfing, but there is so much more to this week of activities and events in Noosa, including lots of partying.
