Travel Alone or With Friends?

Travel Alone or With Friends

When you’re planning your trip around the world (“gap year” or your “Big OE”), one of the major things to think about is whether you’re going to travel alone or travel with friends.

Personally I put off traveling for years because I wanted to share my experiences with a good friend. Eventually after being let down several times by people who kept saying they would be coming along with me, I bit the bullet and bought myself a return ticket to Australia, valid for a year.

Top Five Scary Australian Animals

Australian Drop Bear

Australia is known for having a large number of deadly animals from snakes, spiders and sharks to crocodiles.

We all know about these, our friends constantly remind us of how many deadly creatures inhabit Australia when we first mention that we're going there to visit - jealousy probably because very few people actually die as a direct result from an encounter with an Aussie creature.

This list is not about the top five deadliest animals in Australia, this one is a list of the scariest animals in Australia.

How to Drive in New Zealand

This article was written before the NZ Road Rules changed in March 2012

Just before you buy your $200 dollar bargain off the man with the honest smile or hire a van ready to travel far and wide across the land of the long white cloud (New Zealand), there are a few things that you should know.

If you have arrived from the UK, Ireland, Japan, Oz or one of the few other lands with the sense to drive on the correct side of the road then you will be thinking that everything is the same and you can just hop in your chosen carriage and off you go. If you are from one of the other countries that drive on the wrong side of the road, then your world has just got so much more complicated than you could believe.

How to Travel on a Budget | Part 2

Money Tree

If only money grew on trees... ah well because it doesn't welcome to "How to Travel on a Budget - Part 2", make sure you read How to Travel on a Budget - Part 1 for money saving tips One to Three.

Tip Number Four for traveling on a budget - Don't pay for your accommodation

Don't panic I'm not advising you to do a runner from your accommodation of choice... there's a much easier (and more than likely legal) way to stay for free. If you're staying at a backpackers hostel, in most countries there's often an option to do a few hours work per day in exchange for a night in a shared dorm.

How to pack less & look sexy doing it!

Huge Backpack

Sorry gentlemen, this article is aimed at female backpackers, however, you probably will benefit by reading it, so go for it. You might have a greater respect for female backpackers encountered along your journey. Be warned, this article will not provide secret insight into the lives of women, so stop reading if you are looking for tips on picking up girls at the bar.

Now where was I... oh yes. Almost daily some sad girl walks up to me (at a hostel, on the street, at the airport) huffing and puffing and overburdened by a massive backpack.

How to Avoid Tourist traps

Avoid Tourist traps

A very common question that backpackers and travelers ask themselves is: How can I travel and find unique experiences? It's not about the sights, monuments, landscapes, and museums. Travel is about people. Meet the right people and you will have the right experiences.

After spending a day in Nelson, it was clear to me that we had discovered my favorite place in the South Island of New Zealand. But how to break away from the local tourist traps? With a few more days to spend in Nelson, and having no real plans, I instinctively asked Sally, who works at a local bar. We met while celebrating my birthday, sampling beer and devouring delicious chocolate mouse.

How to find The Right Hostel not just a Good Hostel

hostelqueen

Travel blogs and forums are filled with lists of recommendations for finding good, or at least acceptable, backpackers hostels. Although helpful, these lists fail to differentiate between a good hostel and the right hostel. To be fair, all that can be expected of a typical backpackers hostel is cleanliness, specifically in regards to the beds, kitchen(s) and bathrooms.

Taupo, New Zealand; The Skydive Capital of The World!

Skydive Taupo

Skydiving has come a long way since the first recorded jump was made from a hot air balloon in 1797. Skydiving was developed as a military emergency escape procedure and did not really venture beyond these parameters until the early 1980s, when it developed as a sport in its own right.

New Zealand is a country famous for extreme activities and at its heart lays Taupo, the skydiving destination of choice for over 30,000 people per year. It was here I decided that I needed to find out what all the fuss was about.

Activities to do in NZ if heights scare you

zorb

Bungy jumping and throwing yourself out of a plane; these two extreme activities seem to be the most popular and most talked about things to do in New Zealand, especially amongst those pesky backpackers who want to scare Mum back at home!

But New Zealand isn't all about tying your feet to a piece of flimsy rubber or jumping out of a plane with a hunky Kiwi guy strapped to your back; there are loads more things to do.
