The South of the South Island NZ

catlinsNZ

Travelling in New Zealand is one of the most wonderful things to do, but you should not underestimate the travel time that is needed to drive the number of kilometers between your traveling points. I'm currently living and working at Nomads Queenstown and we're lucky here because Queenstown is a good starting point for doing two or three day long trips to visit different parts of the South Island.

How to meet people in hostels

meetingpeopleinhostels

Meeting new people is one of the best parts about traveling. Different people have different stories to tell (admittedly some are more interesting than others) and there might be an occasional holiday lover amongst all those new people. But how to meet those fellow travelers? Here are some tips that might help you out.

How to eat on a budget

eatonabudget

We all know that travelling can be expensive so saving money wherever possible is important. As a backpacker you try and live as cheaply as possible to make sure you have enough money to do all the awesome things you came away to do. I know that I would rather spend my money on Skydiving, snorkelling The Great Barrier Reef and visiting other amazing places. Sadly though we have to spend money on places to stay and also one of the major expenses when traveling is your food budget.

'Two Up' gambling on Anzac day

two-upanzacday

"Two-up gambling?" you might ask yourself. I'm glad you did (or at least pretending you did). Two-up is a fast paced, coin based, nerve wrecking game only legal on Anzac Day*. It's played in bars and the RSL in Byron Bay. (RSL stands for Returned and Services League, or 'rissole' as the Aussies would call it.)

North Island NZ with Kiwi Experience

kiwiexperience

There is nothing more exciting than heading out on to the open road on board a big green bus. Yes you heard me right! A big green bus. That's exactly what me and 3 of my colleagues did, we waved farewell to Auckland for an action packed 5 days with Kiwi Experience. Lakes and Geysers was the theme of our North Island based trip and we visited, well, lakes and geysers, but of course much, much more.

How to deal with a hangover!

creatingahangover

There is nothing worse than waking up with a stinking hangover! The feeling of dehydration, the sickness in your stomach from all those shots and just the general icky feeling that a hangover brings. Travelling is all about seeing the sights and the local culture but that's difficult to do when you're feeling sorry for yourself because of a stinking hangover because of all the partying. A hangover is the downside to living it up every night.

We like to party!

partybyronbay

Byron Bay is known for its legendary parties and epic nightlife. Byron Bay might be a small town but its nightlife can keep up with the big cities. I've experienced the best parties of my life over here. My favourite kind of night is a dress up party and since I've been here there have been lots of them.

Keeping Warm in Winter

keepinwarminwintermountains

Let me guess, you have just hopped off a plane direct from Brisbane where the temperature had soared to a massive 40 degrees for the past week you were visiting. Maybe you just arrived from the beautiful Fiji Islands where you have been soaking up sun on the white sand and cooling off in the crystal water... or direct from Thailand where it's so hot you could fry an egg on the road.

Exploring the South Island NZ

skydiveabeltasmannz

Two staff from Nomads Capital, our Nomads capital, on their way to discover and explore the South Island of New Zealand in 1 and a half weeks. We traveled with Stray Travel and our bus driver was Miss P. (Miss P. aka Miss Perfect) And yes she was :)

First stop Marahau. This was a big thing for me, because I was talking about doing a skydive in Abel Tasman FOREVER. But I had to wait one more day before I could do that so Tea (the other staff member) and I decided to be active and we rented a kayak for the day.

Backpacker life V 'normal' life

backpackerlifedorms

When backpacking around the world you can sometimes forget what is 'Normal' in life. You spend so much time out on adventures, laying on beaches and having the time of your life it is easy to forget that there is another world out there... called home life or 'normal' life. In the short time that I have been traveling I have noticed lots of differences between the backpacker life and my normal life back home.
