Gateway to the South Island

piction-gatewaytosouthisland

There are a couple of different ways to get to the South Island from Wellington. We're the gateway to the South Island and most tourists coming here for a few days also want to find out about what transport they should use to get to the other island. Obviously which transport they use depends on several factors, like do they have a car? A plane isn't going to be your best option in this situation. ;-)

WIRES - Wildlife Rescue

WildLifeRescueGreentreefrogLib

WIRES, (Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Services) is an Australian non profit organisation for animal welfare. We have a Northern Rivers Branch in Byron Bay of which I'm a member. What prompted me to join WIRES was when my car hit a kangaroo on a dark quiet road around 3 years ago. I was driving at 60 kilometers per hour on a lonely dark road at 11.30 at night. A kangaroo jumped right out in front of me and the front of my car hit the big animal. I stopped the car, put on my hazard lights and wound down my window.

Sydneys unique wildlife

ibissydneywildlife1

When thinking of Australian wildlife, the first three animals that come to mind are the Koalas, Kangaroos and Crocodiles.

When I first arrived in Sydney I had NO IDEA that Sydney is also home to some other, very interesting, wildlife. I was mesmerised by a lot of these creatures as I had no idea what they were... For those of you that freak out like me here is a short explanation of some of Sydney's interesting but kinda creepy wildlife.

Fraser Island for the lazy researcher

Champagne Pools

No doubt when you're travelling around Australia Fraser Island is one of the most important attractions that you want to see. However, if you are anything like myself, chances are that your research got a little bit too hard when you got half way through your trip, with limited internet and a lot of distractions.

Working in the Mad Travel Shop, I get a lot of questions about Fraser Island and what tours are available. They range from day tours to week long tours and can be delivered in the form of 4WD trucks or buses, self-drive, along with many other options.

How to meet new people

meetingnewpeopletours

So you have finally decided to backpack around Australia - or maybe even around the world - and your friends have bailed on you at the very last minute. Or perhaps you don't have any friends, or maybe like me, you love the freedom of solo travelling and prefer to go do it on own and meet new friends on your tourist trail. Whatever your reasons for backpacking on your own are, the fact remains that (unless you are a loner who loves wandering on the streets alone) You will need to meet people on the way if you want to have a memorable trip that you can actually share with other people.

Visitors from home - The Pro's and Con's

Visitorsfromhome

When you have been away from home for a while you can begin to miss family and friends. Some people become home sick after a few days, a few weeks or it could even be months before you start missing home. Sometimes when I am out doing amazing things I find myself thinking "My Mum would love this" or "If only my best mate was here" and think how amazing it would be if they were to jump on a flight and come over. This is not always an option though as Australia is literally on the other side of the world from where I live.

Aucklands best sunset / sunrise spots

sunsetauckland

Some people travel the world for this particular reason alone - sunsets and sunrises. There are so many amazing sights to be seen and you never know when a colourful sky is about to strike, you just have to be lucky enough to be there at the right place and time.

We are lucky enough here, not only in Auckland but in New Zealand, to have some spectacular colours on the horizon.

How to prepare before travelling!

how to prepare for traveling

Leaving the security of your home town is a big deal for any amount of time, whether it be for 3 weeks or 6 months. Preparing for these trips can take months, with the planning of flights and accommodation there are a lot of things to be done. Some parts of the planning are more important than others so take the time to think about what you really need. Some of you might think the teddy bear you got from your granny when you were a baby is the most important thing and for others it might be something as little as your favourite bottle opener.
