Friends and other annoying people

backpackerdouches

One of the best things about travelling the world is the amount of people we meet along the way. You know what I mean, new friends that you instantly click with, friends that you know will be friends for life, friends that you can visit anywhere in the world, but for all of the amazing friends you have met or will meet, you can be certain of one thing - there's going to be some annoying people thrown into the mix there at some point.

Let's face facts, as much as you want to, you can't like every single person you meet along the way, someone sooner or later is going to rub you up the wrong way, whether it be a clash of personalities, or, if they are a complete know it all, whatever you did they did better, arrogant, arsey, condescending or just downright rude, there will always be someone who you will butt heads with.

Without naming and shaming, (I probably should, they were all assholes) I've compiled a list of the most common types of annoying backpackers you should avoid at all costs.

Hippy backpackers

The "Ive done everything" backpacker

So you're all having a few drinks, getting to know each other and the obvious question comes up, "so where have you travelled?", everyone gives their stories but this guy, this one, he's done everything, he's been to all the places mentioned and more, you've had a funny experience, his was funnier, you had a bad time, his was worse, you can't get a word in edgeways. Cue Eye Rolls all around because we all know he's lying!

The "I own the hostel" backpacker

Ok, so you rock up to a hostel and more often than not there will be a fair amount of people that have been there a little longer than everyone else. And don't they know it! They use this to make sure that as they've been around for at least 2 months longer than anyone else that it's their territory. They tell you when you've done things wrong, "Plates don't go there", "That empty shelf for food, no you can't have it, I actually own it", "Movies, yes we will watch the ones on my hard drive",  you just get used to the fact that they are a jerk and you warn others to avoid them. (Actually I might be a little harsh here, not all 'long-termers' are like this, but in some hostels you will find them!)

The "Tagger on" backpacker

So you make a new friend and you think, yeah ok they seem pretty cool, but slowly you realise in actual fact no they are not. They follow you around, constantly, turn up at your dorm door, catch you for dinner. Your travel itinerary becomes their travel itinerary and then you question their motive for travelling because without you, they would be screwed. In the past, I've actually just left the hostel and moved on to the next town to get away from people like this!

There are many different types of backpackers just as there are many different kinds of people you meet in every day life. My advice? Always give people a chance, but if you don't get on with someone... move on and find other people to hang around with who don't annoy you!
