You don't know what to do during your free Wednesday? You're bored in the TV room, watching Twilight or Love Actually for the seventh time. How about climbing a volcano? Or visiting the Auckland Museum? Or perhaps some chocolate tasting in a trendy chocolate boutique in Parnell. Well, good news, you can visit all of these places and the only money you need is the $1.90 for the bus.
What happens during a typical Wednesday Walking Tour?
At 10am, in the Mad Travel Shop below Nomads Auckland, I'm waiting for a group of backpackers who I will lead to the Britomart Transport Centre just round the corner.
Here is where our journey begins... on the 274 bus we head to Mount Eden. It's not simply a green hill, no, it's a dormant volcano, 196 metres high in the middle of the city. The bus stops at the base and we begin our walking/hiking/climbing tour of the highest natural point of the city. It takes only 20 minutes to reach the summit and admire the views. From here you can see Rangitoto Island on one side, Eden Park Rugby Stadium on another, ahead of you is the impressive SkyTower and city, basically amazing panoramic views of Auckland.
After enjoying the views (and resting after the walk up) we head back down, this time walking towards the Auckland Museum, located in the Auckland Domain (the oldest park in the city). Auckland Museum is free for locals but they do ask for a gold coin donation from tourists. Usually we spend around 2 hours in the museum, but there's no time restrictions, you're the time keeper.
Currently there is an exhibition being held about the seas and oceans which is really amazing, with 3d movies and reproductions of sharks. There is also a huge part in the Museum about the wars known by New Zealand and if you are interested in volcanoes and rides then you can test the volcanic eruptions simulator as well.
To finish our trip, we walk back to the city via Parnell, a historic suburb of Auckland. It was built in 1841 and there are still houses standing from that period of time. Our last stop is The Chocolate Boutique in Parnell Village, a lovely little chocolate shop where we stop for a hot chocolate and if you like you can purchase some candies or any of the numerous chocolates (highly recommended!).
After this gastronomic stop, we make our way back the hostel full of photos and memories of our lovely day in Auckland.
We have plenty of other things to do here during the week at Nomads Auckland. Check out our current weekly schedule (subject to change due to weather conditions).
