Holland House, The Dutch Shop Sydney

Written by: - Reading time: 2 minutes

When travelling to another country it’s quite common to miss having things around you that you’re used to, especially your favourite food and treats! It can be a real challenge to find things that can adequately replace your favourites from home. Luckily, for Dutch people staying in Sydney, there is a perfect solution for your problems – The Dutch Shop.

Not too far away from the city centre there is a lovely little part of Sydney called Smithfield. It’s about 1.5 hours journey from central station, including a bus ride and a train.

The train will take you to this little town where you really have the feeling you’re not in Sydney anymore, it’s so peaceful and quiet.

If you’re used to living in the big city one of the first things you’ll notice is that there is no constant noise of traffic. Also no herds of people walking on the side of the road. It’s just a road that makes way for the occasional car that drives by. And on the side of the road there is nothing but beautiful houses that look like they have never seen a bad day.

Holland House, The Dutch Shop

The Dutch shop really is in the middle of nowhere if you think about it, you would think it’s on a road somewhere with a lot of shops. You will have almost given up and declared yourself lost but then you get there… And it looks so much like anything you would expect from a Dutch house.

The things they sell in there are really not to be missed and will satisfy any Dutchie that has been away from The Netherlands for more than a few weeks.

Pepernoten, appelmoes, poffertjes, hagelslag, Calve pindakaas, stroopwafels, frikandellen, kroketten, mayonaise, real Dutch cheese…

… and the list goes on and on.

Also there is a cute little cafe in there where you can have things like buns with a kroket or Dutch cheese. The people that work there are mostly Dutch too so if you miss talking to dutch people, here is your chance!
