Queenstown Travel Guide

Set amidst the enchanting Wakatipu and the accurately named 'Remarkables' Mountain range, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was purely the scenery that made Queenstown menacingly encapulating, alas no; the spectacular scenery merely provides an outstanding backdrop for the wonders within (and an outstanding backdrop for a skydive!)

Queenstown is stunning, even when the weather is bad the views can’t be less beautiful! With remarkable mountains and a stunning lake it's hard to find somewhere comparable (in my opinion anyway!). The last few days the weather has been really good in Queenstown and it is finally springtime. I decided to do the Queenstown Hill walking track, because this day was perfect for a walk up the hill to see the beautiful views that everybody was talking about.

When you send a Kiwi, a Leprechaun and the Mad Hatter on a day trip jumping, climbing and scrambling through a Canyon you are bound to end up with a few stories!

Always having to be fashionably late, we sat waiting for Denny to arrive. Needless to say she arrived sandwich in hand and full of chat. Not knowing what we were in for exactly we glanced through the brochure of photos before we headed off... not the best idea for those who are not exactly confident!

paradisesafari

It was a misty Wednesday morning, and the cloud had still not lifted over Queenstown, when I jumped into the Paradise 4WD Safari van for a Lord of The Rings Tour, with a coffee in one hand and a slab of chocolate cake in the other. Shane, my guide, insisted that I share the cake with the rest of the group but I respectfully declined; claiming that my chocoholic addiction would cause severe mood swings should I not manage to consume the whole piece of cake to myself as a breakfast treat.

It was just another normal day for the 3 of us working in Nomads Queenstown backpackers hostel, when we were invited to attend a day at Off Road Adventures!

Ronan, Jess & I all went into the shop bright and early and were loaded into the 4wd beasts which took us to our first location, this was private land on the back roads to Arrowtown which had road tracks about as narrow as Ronan's... well, it was narrow! The views were absolutely amazing and you could see over the whole of Queenstown from the top of the hill.

Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown Lakes District, Otag...

What better way to start off your birthday at Nomads Queenstown Backpackers Hostel than to head out in the sun and see Queenstown from the sky! I grabbed one of my colleagues, Caz, and we headed down to Lake Wakatipu to go parasailing on the Paraflights boat. We got fitted with a life jacket and boarded the boat with a few more tourists and were ready to set off.

ajhackettledgebungy

Queenstown has a lot of activities to offer, from easy and fun ones to totally extreme ones, from cheap ones to more expensive ones. One thing I promised myself I would never do is bungy jump, because why pay money to do an activity that you are so scared of? But guess what, I got talked into doing it and now, having done the AJ Hackett ledge bungy myself, I found the answer: It is an experience that will stick with you for a lifetime!

Serious Fun River Surfing 122

Nomads Queenstown backpackers hostel battles the river again! This time we didn't have a raft and paddles, just a body board and a pair of flippers to get us through the rapids. Our bus driver Dan from Serious Fun River Surfing got us to the site where we got geared up. Wet suits on, boots, life jacket, flippers, boards and helmets. I went for a lovely purple one to match my new hair!

Cardrona Hotel (est. 1863), Wanaka, NZ

If you come to Queenstown in winter then I would highly recommend you get up to Cardrona Ski Field. It's about an hours drive from Queenstown, and 35 minutes from Wanaka, and you can get buses from either places, or make the awesome drive yourself!

The road across the Crown Range is the highest main road New Zealand, with great views and a lot of history.
