Beach Bum Bus Waiheke Island

Sadly, for now, The Beachbum Bus is no longer running, but there are other ways to enjoy the gorgeous Waiheke Island.

Waiheke Island, also known as the island of wine, is one of those Islands in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf that people tend to miss. When backpackers visit Auckland they sometimes forget about the Islands and what they have to offer. This is also partly because it isn't always obvious that you can visit the islands and exactly why you might want to visit them.

rangitotoisland auckland

Rangitoto Island is at its most basic, a volcano. More often than not a trip to a volcano often implies, without really needing to, a steep walk for an impressive view and this can sometimes cause people to pass on by if hiking isn’t really their thing. Rangitoto is still a volcano that offers a walk (it isn’t too steep until the last three minutes) and an impressive view, however, it also offers an arguably more gentle (remembering that the ground is volcanic rock) ride up to the summit via truck.

Kapiti Island Wellington

When most people think of Wellington, the NZ Sevens, Cuba Carnival and lazy sundays on the Oriental Parade spring to mind. But in the words of the guys at Stray travel, I'm going to take you 'further off the beaten track' to the stunning Kapiti Coast.

'Kapiti Island... a wildlife nature reserve'

The Kapiti Coast is less than an hour from Wellington Central on State Highway 1 and is open to the Tasman Ocean, the only thing standing in it's way is the beautiful Kapiti Island, which is also a wildlife nature reserve.

The heart of Wellington City lies amidst a vibrant waterfront, a corporate lane known as Lambton Quay and wider beauties such as the Kapiti coast overlooking the appropriately named Kapiti Island. Wellington City is a destination to fall in love with.

However, in order to really feel the excitement, culture and social feel of Wellington, look no further than Courtenay Place and the adjoining Cuba St for the best bars Wellington has to offer.

Whoever came up with the idea of river boarding in Queenstown is a genius. Think white water rafting crossed with body boarding and you've got the right idea. As far as summer activities in Queenstown goes, Mad Dog River Boarding ranks up with the best of them.  After so many activities involving plummeting from great heights it's a pleasant feeling dipping yourself into the water and getting your heart racing on the ground.
