West Coast Safari Adventure Tours

Tasmania has always intrigued me so when I was offered the opportunity to take part on a West Coast Safari with Adventure Tours, I was quick to say yes! Our adventure started with a night in Hobart – the capital of Tasmania. We were picked up from our accommodation at 6.30am by our Adventure Tours guide and met the rest of the group and started to make our way into the wonderful wilderness that is West Coast Tasmania.

Our first stop was at Mount Field National Park where we saw the deepest lake in Australia. Mt Field National Park really is incredible. It has an amazing diversity in vegetation, ranging from tall gum forests and massive tree ferns at the base of the mountain up to rainforest and alpine vegetation higher up. There are wonderful walks and some of the tallest trees in the world.

We gradually made our way to Strahan via the Franklin Gordon National Park stopping for photos and short walks. This area is in the heart of what is known as the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and is absolutely gorgeous. There are mountains, rainforest, deep river valleys with some of the wildest rivers I have ever seen. We saw several waterfalls too.

We arrived in Strahan around 6pm. Adventure Tours have wonderful accommodation in unique locations only used by them. Our overnight stop was in a turn of the century home surrounded by gorgeous gardens with wonderful views of the bay.

Whilst we stood around and chatted with the other travellers in our group, our guide cooked us dinner.

The following day we spent a little time discovering Strahan before heading to the Henty Sand Dunes and Ocean Beach – the longest beach in Tasmania at 38km long! Our overnight stop was in the heart of Cradle Mountain National Park and we stayed in comfortable, warm timber cabins. The weather was rainy and cold but the scenery was dramatic. We saw lots of wombats – I don’t think I have ever seen so many in one place! The forests were amazing – with vivid greens – probably due to the enormous rainfall that this area gets every year.

We hiked around Dove Lake with the rest of the group – unfortunately, it rained heavily throughout! This didn’t dampen our spirits though!

On our last day we headed towards Ross for lunch, and then on to Launceston – where we said goodbye to our fellow travellers. We really loved Tasmania and found it a complete contrast to anything we have ever seen on the mainland. I would thoroughly recommend a visit and I absolutely recommend a West Coast Safari with Adventure Tours.
