Has anyone ever eaten breakfast with 24 lions / lionesses surrounding you? I have, it was awesome. The Cairns Wildlife safari reserve in Speerwah north of Kuranda does Breakfast with the Beasts daily for $49.95. That price includes extrance to the park, all the wildlife shows and talks and breakfast with all the lions surrounding you.

I went on Ocean Spirit on Friday, it was 20 knot winds with only 8 metres visibility. Even though the visibility wasn't that great we still got to see all the coral and sea life of The Great Barrier Reef. In fact I saw 4 turtles on the semi sub, 2 reef sharks, 1 stingray and 2 nemos (clown fish). The water was a bit chilly, nothing too bad though and the ocean looked gorgeous. It was a full boat of 140 people.

Despite being in Cairns for well over 2 years now it is really easy to get stuck in the daily grind of life and not actually get out and explore everything that Cairns has to offer. But as I have learnt, sometimes you must set time aside to make sure you make the most of the area you live in. So, recently I cleared my busy schedule as it was time to explore Fitzroy Island with Raging Thunder.

Located in the Savannah region outside of Cairns, the Undara Volcanic National Park is an attraction that is missed by most backpackers, but definitely worth a visit for a truly primeval experience. The park is located along the Savannah way about a 4 hour drive from Cairns. The most famous feature of the National Park is its lava tubes. These lava tubes were formed by volcanic eruptions around 20,000 years ago.

While these sites are fascinating and definitely a must do on any travelers intinerary, there is so much more to do here in the Cairns region that often gets missed. One such adventure is a trip along the Wheelbarrow Way to visit the historic mining town of Chillagoe to explore some magnificent limestone caves.

Do you live and breath for diving and snorkelling? Do you feel the immediate calm coming over you when you hear the sound of the ocean and smell the salt? I do, so for my 25th birthday I gave myself the best gift I could think of - a liveaboard trip, in true backpacker style. I went out on the magnificent Reef Encounter for a 2 day 1 night trip.

Hartleys crocodile adventures

When arriving in Australia if you ask people what animals they associate with Australia and what they hope to see before they leave you will usually hear the same answer. Koalas, Kangaroos and also Crocodiles. Cairns is well known for its crocodiles, I mean you can't even swim in the ocean along the esplanade for risk of them being in the water. Located just 40 minutes north of Cairns Hartley's Crocodile Adventures is the place to see and interact with these amazing creatures.

When I think about quad-biking I think about mud, and racing around on bikes. Well that's basically exactly what is it. I had never been quad-biking or ATV riding before so you imagine my excitement when a group of us decided we would give it a go. Located 10 minutes North of Cairns Blazing Saddles is set in the middle of an 18 Acre sugar came farm abundant with native birds and amphibious creatures of all shapes and sizes! You will also meet their resident geese, peacocks and ducks, perhaps even spot a crocodile!
