In order to work in Australia legally you will need to apply for a TFN (Tax File Number). A TFN is a unique number issued to you by the Inland Revenue, which allows you to work and pay taxes!

To apply for your Tax File Number visit http://ato.gov.au/.

In order to get your Tax File Number you will need to provide the following documentation:

• Your Passport Number
• Australian Postal Address (So your TFN can be sent to you)

Your Tax File Number should take between 2 - 3 weeks to arrive. You do not have to wait for your Tax File Number to arrive before starting any employment, once you have applied you will be given a temporary number.

Tax Return

Anyone holding a Working Holiday Visa is entitled to a tax return, so all or part of the tax they paid whilst working in Australia could be returned!

There are 2 ways for you to apply for your tax return:

• E-tax. Your can apply for your tax return online at http://ato.gov.au/. Online tax return applications usually take 14 days.
• This is a paper application that can be downloaded from http://ato.gov.au/. Once you have completed the forms you can send them back to the address at the top of the form. This means a tax return can take longer.
