How to find The Right Hostel not just a Good Hostel

hostelqueen

Travel blogs and forums are filled with lists of recommendations for finding good, or at least acceptable, backpackers hostels. Although helpful, these lists fail to differentiate between a good hostel and the right hostel. To be fair, all that can be expected of a typical backpackers hostel is cleanliness, specifically in regards to the beds, kitchen(s) and bathrooms.

Taupo, New Zealand; The Skydive Capital of The World!

Skydive Taupo

Skydiving has come a long way since the first recorded jump was made from a hot air balloon in 1797. Skydiving was developed as a military emergency escape procedure and did not really venture beyond these parameters until the early 1980s, when it developed as a sport in its own right.

New Zealand is a country famous for extreme activities and at its heart lays Taupo, the skydiving destination of choice for over 30,000 people per year. It was here I decided that I needed to find out what all the fuss was about.

Activities to do in NZ if heights scare you

zorb

Bungy jumping and throwing yourself out of a plane; these two extreme activities seem to be the most popular and most talked about things to do in New Zealand, especially amongst those pesky backpackers who want to scare Mum back at home!

But New Zealand isn't all about tying your feet to a piece of flimsy rubber or jumping out of a plane with a hunky Kiwi guy strapped to your back; there are loads more things to do.

Uluru / Ayers Rock - The Red Centre

uluru

‘Oi, mate! Would you climb the roof of the Taj Mahal?’ The Indian gent that had just finished his descent looked slightly confused at the young Aborigine man at the bottom of the path. Needless to say the Indian tourist not getting the point that was trying to be made smiled and walked away. More about that in a bit.

The big stone in "The Red Centre" or middle of Australia, once known as Ayers Rock and now more commonly as Uluru, is one of those things that you really need to see to appreciate. There are few things that make you stop and stare like the first time you see Uluru. I’m not sure if it’s the size of the thing or the colours and textures.

things to do in cairns - esplanade lagoon

Running out of cash when traveling around the world is a problem many backpackers across, so with Cairns in Northern Queensland, Australia being such a huge drawcard for backpackers I thought I'd give you a few ideas on free or cheap things to do in Cairns.

There are lots more things we could add, but here are some of my favourite ways to spend time (and not much money) in Cairns!

Is Taking Drugs when Travelling a Good Idea?

Psychoactive Drugs

In a lot of ways travelling away from home is a rite of passage. You feel like you are doing things that no one else does and going to far off lands, from which your parents are convinced you will never return. In many ways it is. I personally don’t think that travelling around foreign lands is inherently dangerous, but there are a few things you might want to think about.

Discreet Places to Have Sex in Backpackers Hostels

where to have sex in a hostel

Backpacker - definition 1; budget traveler using hostels and seeking new cultural / exotic experiences

Backpacker - definition 2; raging hormones on legs seeking new cultural / erotic conquests

Backpackers are a strange breed of people. They set off from home telling their worried parents that they're venturing out into the world to "find themselves" and to experience cultures around the world.

Get a fun job on your working holiday, spa pool reef encounter

Ideally we'd all go travelling around the world for a year or more, experiencing new and exciting cultures and seeing amazing things we'd never even imagined and not doing a jot of work for the whole year. Realistically however most of us have to think about a working holiday because we need a way of getting some cash somewhere along the way. In some countries you could sell a kidney for some cash, however this is not really an option for 99% of us!

How nice would it be to be on holiday for a year without working? Easy answer; it would be fantastic!

Cairns, Australias Backpacker Capital

scuba diving great barrier reef

The backpacker bars in Cairns are famous amongst the backpacking and travelling community of the world because of the stories that spread amongst them like wildfire. The bars are wild and the drinks are cheap. Toga parties, blind date competitions, Coyote Ugly dancing challenges or Mr or Miss Backpacker Competitions. Making a fool of yourself when you've had a few too many is commonplace in Cairns...
