THAILAND: To go or not to go...

saphaipae hostel

Welcome to a series of articles written by a couple of Australian backpackers who have just arrived in Thailand and wanted to find out whether the recent military coup has affected tourism.

So should you go to Thailand or not? The answer is Thailand is open for business. With all the media hype we wanted to go and check it out for ourselves. Here's what we found...

Day one arriving to Bangkok, business as usual at the airport and one day in we still haven't seen any military presence anywhere... Our local friends tell us they actually feel safer at the moment...

Great Australia Road Trips

roadtrip

In some ways you can't think of Australia without also thinking, road trip. Driving around Australia is one of the most popular ways to see the country for backpackers. Driving gives you the freedom to stop where you wish to for as little or as long as you wish. There are some disadvantages, driving can become expensive when taking on the whole of Australia and so many of the backpacker buses are better value. However, there are some parts of Australia that really should be driven if you get the chance and have the budget for it.

Is Auckland The Most Misunderstood City in the World

aucklandcity

Auckland has got to be the most random, visited, but misunderstood city I have ever been to. Not a day goes by that I do not hear "you only need a couple of days to see Auckland" or "ah I can't wait to get out of Auckland" but what is most baffling is why people do not think there is much to do in Auckland or that somewhere else in New Zealand that they haven't yet visited will automatically be better?

Before I arrived in New Zealand when people asked me whereabouts I was going to be based, every single response to 'Auckland' was a slightly disappointed "oh right". The majority of those people had never even considered going to New Zealand yet Auckland's reputation carries a long way.

Top 10 things to do in Queenstown

things to do queenstown

Moving to Queenstown to get work was a pretty exciting prospect and I was not disappointed! My two travel mates and I shuffled into Queenstown after a crazy four weeks travelling the North Island in a bright red camper van and I am pretty sure we saved the best bit of New Zealand for last, because there are SO many things to do in Queenstown, too many to mention them all here so I am going to list my personal Top 10 things to do in Queenstown.

Is TripAdvisor destroying your experience?

Is tripadvisor ruining your travels

It's a stunning day. We pass a beautiful square and on the edge of the square is a nice looking restaurant. It seems to be the perfect location for some good people-watching and a light lunch. We look at the menu. It's the standard tourist menu. Nothing fantastic, all the usual gringo suspects, at very reasonable prices. I would happily eat here, I would go in with low expectations and be delighted to be surprised.

Isla del Sol, Lake Titicaca; THE chill out spot in Bolivia

isla del sol bolivia

After being on the road in Bolivia for a few weeks, relaxing somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of La Paz is more than welcome. Let me introduce you to the most amazing chill out spot in Bolivia - Isla del Sol.

The Incan's believe that the the sun actually came from this small island on Lake Titicaca in North Western Bolivia. Now it's home to a few locals who mostly rely on income from agriculture and some tourism. There are no cars but plenty of donkeys.

I was almost shot by a bogan in the Outback

aussie-outback120

When I decided to go backpacking, I knew ultimately at some point that the money would run out, but it would be cool, I thought, it's part and parcel right? Eating noodles, scraping together a few dollars here and there for a beer, begging any hostel to let me clean a few beds for a roof over my head.

But my fail-proof plan, well, it failed...

What these backpackers did on a pool table will shock you!

pool-table-balls-game

Emergency callouts are common at hostels, from fire alarms being set off in the middle of the night to backpackers locking themselves out after too much to drink and they've forgotten how doors work, but the emergency phone call this hostel worker got one particular night had him racing out of the house and into his car in his PJ's!

Yes... he'd just got the phone call that no hostel manager wants to receive!
