THAILAND: To go or not to go...

Welcome to a series of articles written by a couple of Australian backpackers who have just arrived in Thailand and wanted to find out whether the recent military coup has affected tourism.

So should you go to Thailand or not? The answer is Thailand is open for business. With all the media hype we wanted to go and check it out for ourselves. Here's what we found...

Day one arriving to Bangkok, business as usual at the airport and one day in we still haven't seen any military presence anywhere... Our local friends tell us they actually feel safer at the moment...

So what to do on your first day in Bangkok?

First find yourself a place to stay. We had a look at Saphaipae hostel and surely this must be one of the coolest hostels in Bangkok.

But if you really want to get amongst it stay at Back Home backpackers in the Khao San Road area. Back Home backpackers is run by an Australian expat from Byron Bay. It's a small hostel which is close to all the action but tucked away in a quiet pocket so you can get a good nights sleep, if you want to... and the beds are amazing!

Second, try some of the local fare...

...or you could do what every other westerner does and go for a Pad Thai for only 90 Baht! Yum!

Now after a long flight nothing feels better than having an AMAZING hour long massage in one of the local places on Khao San Road that will set you back around 220 Baht, that's about $10 in Aussie money... yeah money well spent!

The Khao San Road area is alive and well with an array of stalls and the most bizarre stuff you've ever seen.

The bars are pumping with World Cup matches shown on giant screens and buckets of cocktails and beer cost less than a bottle of water... yes Thailand is definitely open for business.

Stay tuned for more updates as we travel around Thailand to get the scoop first hand...
