Patong madness... no curfew here, this places goes off! We headed to Phuket and have chosen to stay at Patong and check it out. This place is known for it's nightlife... the bars are massive!! We went to the walking street (Bangla Rd) and came across the Tiger Bar, needs to be seen to be believed! This place has 20 bars just on the ground floor. Cheap beer and lots of fun.
Next we hit the Kee Hotel and went to the roof top bar for a cocktail... a very different scene indeed. The view was great, this is the only rooftop bar in Phuket and the 360 degree view is great at sunset. The bar had tables that glowed... oh and the cocktails were yummy of course.
Patong is known for its great many "shows", and the beach is also great to swim and people watch. There are other areas like Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Rawai Beach and Nai Harn Beach... all really easy to get to. They all have great places to stay and a nightlife scene... albeit toned down from Patong. I have stayed at Kata Beach resort and loved it... this trip however was designed to discover the weird and wonderful... so Patong is the spot for that.
Ok so the nights are covered, but what to do during the day. Well... how about the Tiger Kingdom, have your choice from playing with tiger cubs to sitting with a massive tigers, all with no chains. It's a little controversial but we saw no issues... great care was taken.
Visit the Big Buddha, this statue can be seen for miles. This is the islands best known statue located on top of a hill, best to catch from Kata Noi Beach. There are also other temples; Wat Chalong and also Wat phra thong... leave yourself some time and maybe head off early before it gets too hot.
Other attractions include the Butterfly Garden, Phuket Zoo, Orchid Farms, Elephant Trekking, Aquariums and even a snake and cobra show if you are up for it. For me personally the cobra show is a no go, but these are my own issues!
Ok, saved the best for last. Thought we would head out and see what all the fuss was about with the "Phuket Fantasea" show. Got picked up from the hotel and taken out, entry includes the transfer, buffet dinner and the show. I have to say that I have not seen anything like it, firstly this place is like a mini Disney Land , you have dinner and the show starts so loads of time to explore. The Elephant Temple is amazing so too is the tiger temple, this blog will never really prepare you for the spectacle. Can I just say that the cost is high if you are a backpacker, however do yourself a favour and go! The food is amazing so enjoy a good feed; a smorgasbord of greater proportion I have never seen!
The show lasts for close to one and a half hours, it is full of acrobatics, pyrotechnics, cannons, flying people and at one stage there were 16 elephants on stage. With all that going on it's funny but one random part when a group of 10 chickens run across the stage perfectly trained made me laugh so hard... a mini highlight. You have to check this out!!
Phuket taxi's are more regulated this trip, good to see some positive changes happening. Get the shared minibus as much as possible... this was 180THB from the airport to Patong, the cheapest way for a single traveller.
Phuket, a big thumbs up!
