Art Galleries

Even if the weather isn't quite perfect there's plenty of cool places to explore in Wellington. If you've visited the amazing Te Papa Museum already and want some 'culture' that's a little more interesting than the cinema then why not try one of the city's many amazing galleries. (We're very cultured here in New Zealands capital city!). Many of Wellingtons galleries are a short walk from Nomads Capital on Cuba Street so you don't even have to go far.

These are my personal top 5 galleries in Wellington.

Matchbox Studio - 166 Cuba Street

You might have walked past this gallery on Cuba Street every day without even realising it. They have lively, colourful and funny exhibitions. Check out their website (http://matchboxstudios.co.nz/) to be informed about their events or new exhibitions.

Eyeball Kicks - 177 Cuba Street

Still on Cuba Street, it might be more of a shop than a gallery but it's all the same to me! You can find some amazing and cool paintings all made by computer (called 'Digital Painting' I believe).

Kiwi Art House - 288 Cuba Street

At the very end of Cuba Street you'll find this little gallery in which you'll find different paintings of New Zealand landscapes and life. Don't be shy the curator is keen to share his knowledge with you and...

now here's a top tip... if your timing is good you will even get a free piece of cake!

Museum Art Hotel - 90 Cable Street

Is it a hotel or a gallery? The answer is BOTH! It's a weird place to put a gallery but I actually enjoyed it. The gallery is very lively because it's situated in the hotel's main hall. Most of the works of art are paintings by Kiwi artists but you can also find sculptures and some animated artwork.

Don't forget to check out the hotel car park as well!

Kura Gallery - 19 Allen Street

Situated in Allen Street near Courtenay Place this gallery is truly awesome. You'll find an exhibition with some cool modern Maori art and further into the gallery you'll see different Kiwi artwork like glasses, dishes, paintings, sculptures, prints and more surprises! Although some of the things are a little out of the backpacker price range I did buy myself an awesome Maori deck of cards!

Some other galleries that you might enjoy:

  • Shona Moller Gallery - 42 Cable Street
  • The Art of Dr Seuss - 74 Cable Street
  • Bartley Comp Gallery - 56 Ghuznee Street
  • {Suite} Gallery - Level 2, 147 Cuba Street
  • Bowen Gallery - 39 Ghuznee Street
  • Robert Heald Gallery - 209 Leftbank, Cuba Mall

I hope you enjoy them all as much as I do!
