Flying into Milford Sound!

Jenna and I were delighted when Liz from Mitre Peak invited us on an amazing fly in fly out trip to Milford Sound. Weather reports had scared us the night before and we thought maybe our trip wasn't going to happen but we were lucky to wake up to a beautiful morning in Queenstown with clear skies.

We made our way out to the airport and boarded a ten seater plane with our lovely pilot Grant. Grant is a local to the area and knew everything there is to know about Queenstown and everything on our way to Milford Sound. He took us over beside Coronet Peak snow field, which unfortunately didn't have any snow on it as it was out of season but further into the trip we were spoiled with heaps of snow and glaciers.

Just after passing the tip of Lake Wakatipu we fly the whole way through the Routeburn track. It was far easier to see all the lakes and countryside from the air than having to do all that walking! We saw heaps of different mountain faces, lakes plus heaps of snow. The views were absolutely amazing!

After about 25 minutes of these beautiful Lord of The Ring style views we turned a corner and entered Milford Sound. Grant took us on a loop  over waterfalls and pristine waters out to the coast. We then hit down on the tiny runway, had a quick trip down to the main centre where all the boats go from. We saw the huge Mitre Peak cruiser too.

So if it wasn't cool enough to get flown into Milford Sound on a ten seater plane we were then so lucky to get choppered back home with Helicopter line'! I've only been in a helicopter a couple of times but this was amazing. Our driver Calum really gave us a fun time. As he went over steep mountain tops he would plunge down as fast as possible over the other side, almost felt like a rollercoaster. And it was soooooo much fun!

We thought all our Christmas's had come together when he told us we were about the stop on a glacier. We made snow balls and even snow angels plus took heaps of amazing pictures over the tops of all the mountains. After this we made our way back to the airport over Glenorchy and Paradise out over Ben Lomand.

Definitely the best way to see Milford Sound is by air and I want to thank Mitre Peak and Helicopter Line for one of the most unforgettable days I've ever had! You can book these trips here at the Mad Travel Shop at Nomads Queenstown.
