There’s lots of things to do in Auckland City but how many people know what there is on offer on Auckland’s North Shore. If you only have a few days in Auckland and not enough time to visit the snow, well how about heading over to the North Shore and visiting SnowPlanet.
By now you’re probably thinking what is this snowplanet, SNOWPLANET is New Zealand’s first and only all-year indoor snow resort where guests can experience the thrill of snow sports and the atmosphere of a snow village only 20 minutes north of Auckland.
Now it may seem strange to be talking about an indoor ski-ing and snowboarding location when New Zealand currently has heaps of snow in many parts of the country. Seriously if you love ski-ing or snowboarding then I highly recommend booking a bed at Nomads Queenstown, it’s very busy down there at the moment because of all the awesome winter sports you can do and the incredible ski-fields in the area so book early!
However, if like me you have run out of annual leave and a trip from Auckland to Queenstown is just not feasible, then Snow Planet is the perfect alternative for you. (It’s incredibly weird to visit in summer by the way when you’re in shorts, t-shirt and jandals (flip flops) and then minutes later are wrapped up in ski gear in the snow.)
The Snow dome is -5º Celsius, so warm clothing and gloves are highly recommended for your own safety and well being, if you don’t have any you can always hire clothing there. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert the terrain park is for you, with a range of slide bars and jumps available all year round.
If you're anything like me and you hardly snowboard or ski let alone touched snow, then I can tell you now that Snowplanet is the best place for you to learn! I thought at the end of the year I am going to challenge myself to learn to ski and snowboard!
Ok so I spent a bit of money with getting my own gear but you can also hire equipment from them and at a pretty good rate. Because I was a newbie I decided to have 2 lessons, the guys at Snowplanet are some of the most helpful people, even after you've finished your lessons, and you're quite not doing it right they come over and give you a few hints!
Opening hours Monday – Friday 10am – 10pm and Weekend 9am – 10pm.
Need directions? It’s easy from Auckland – Follow State Highway 1 North, exit at the “Silverdale” off ramp, turn right at the first roundabout and cross the bridge over the motorway, cross the next roundabout and after 100m turn right into Small Road. Snowplanet is located beyond Action Raceway, the indoor go-kart track at the very end of small road.
I’m trying to organise a trip to SnowPlanet with my co-workers at Nomads Auckland, however I think they all know that I will put their snowboarding skills to shame so as of right now it’s just me and one other person. I’ll let you know how my powers of persuasion work out!
