Lost Art of Sending Postcards

Written by: - Reading time: 3 minutes

Nowadays, when you want to inform your family and friends back home about all your crazy adventures abroad, you can easily send an email, a message through Facebook, create a travel blog, or even have a videochat by using Skype. But before all these inventions, people used to put effort in writing letters and postcards. Can you imagine a time where it took weeks, or maybe even months to receive a letter/postcard from your loved ones?! It’s insane!

Because of all these technological advances, I think that sending postcards is even more valuable because it shows that somebody is thinking of you and they are actually taking the time to buy a postcard, compose a message and send it. They are just so much more personal

I love sending postcards and letters. I love receiving postcards and letters even more, because it is so rare to get actual mail these days. Since my best friend told me a couple of days ago that he sent me a letter, the first thing I do every morning is to check the mail box. I’m so excited now and can’t wait. I think that is another reason why I love sending and receiving mail so much. It is very exciting and the waiting time increases the anticipation. Also, what I personally really like about it is that you can take your time to pick the right words and be more precise with what you want to say.

Two days ago, while I was working behind the reception of Nomads Byron Bay, a guest came up to me and asked if I had ever heard anything about sending postcards from Australia to Germany FOR FREE?! This was the first time I had ever heard of it. Since my curiosity got the best of me, I had the strong urge to find out if this was true.

Unfortunately, after some research I had to conclude that this was just a myth. It would have been really awesome because if it had been true it could have saved me a lot of money, but this will not stop me from sending postcards from the lovely Byron Bay. By paying for the postcard (and its delivery) you even show your friends or family (or whoever you send the postcard to) that you care about them since you invested both time and money in sending this postcard 🙂

So take some time and make some people happy back home!

  1. Hello, was just looking into the reason why australia and germany can send postcards to each other for free and found this post. I can tell you that, at least between 2012 and 2014, it could be done. As me and my girlfriend did this many times in both directions. I even made my own post cards, wrote an address on them and put them in the post box. They did seem to take longer, around 2-3 weeks to get there. Still have not found out why.
