History of the Byron Bay Bluesfest

It all began in 1990 as a 3 day music festival over the Easter weekend at ‘The Piggery’ at our very own Arts Factory Lodge in Byron Bay itself. Known originally as the ‘East Coast International Blues & Roots Music Festival’ it attracted only around 6000 people. Each year the crowds grow and what is now known as Bluesfest has found a permanent home at Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm. The location has the capacity for over 100,000 people and camping for 6,000.

The Bluesfest to this day remains one of Australia’s most acclaimed and respected festivals and has been inspirational for many other festivals around the world.

The festival has hosted a number of internationally recognised artists over its history including John Mayer, ZZ Top, REM, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, The Roots, Michael Franti, The Dave Matthews Band, Donovan Frankenreiter, The Black Keys, Joss Stone, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Sinead O’Connor. Not to mention all the Australian local favourites such as The John Butler Trio, Xavier Rudd, The Cat Empire, Keith Urban, Midnight Oil, Angus and Julia Stone and Wolfmother.

In 2011, the Bluesfest went one step further, with a few names that have influenced musical history for decades. Bob Dylan and BB King were added to the 2011 line up to join the prestigious list of names to play the ever-growing festival down under.

The Bluesfest has collected a number of awards over the years including the Helpmann Award for Australia’s best contemporary Music Festival in 2005 and 2006, and has been awarded Rhythms Magazine readers poll for ‘Australia’s Best Music Festival’ every year between 1994 and 2010. Bluesfest won Gold at NSW Tourism Awards for Majors Events & Festivals
