Beer and Cider in Byron Bay

Considering Byron Bay is not a large town, you may be surprised to know that it is home to two breweries; Byron Bay Brewery and Stone & Wood. Two excellent brews. I can personally attest to this. We all love a good beer, or a cider, and we all love going out to a great bar, so let’s have a look at the top five spots to indulge in a beer or cider in Byron Bay.

1. The Byron Bay Brewery

Located at the Arts Factory Village and just across the car park from the famous Arts Factory Lodge. Home of award winning ales; such as Byron Bay Pale Ale & Byron Bay Billy Goat. Not only can you drink beer but you can have a tour of the onsite brewery (Tuesday & Thursday at 4.00 pm, no booking required) and buy a tasting tray of five beers (which come in a groovy surfboard shaped tray). There is an awesome beer garden that sits beneath an ancient Morton Bay fig, plus live entertainment for free. Did I mention these guys have the coolest beer labels ever!

Local tip: now tasting, Sandman beer on tap.

2. Treehouse on Belongil

The best way to get to this great local hangout is to walk from Byron Bay’s Main Beach out toward the Wreck (local surf spot) and keep heading south to Belongil Beach. Take our tip and leave just before sunset and it will take you twenty minutes to walk to the Treehouse while the sun is setting, colouring the sky with rainbow hues. When you arrive you just have to cross the road to this retro bar and indulge in late afternoon bevvies. I personally recommend a Pear Cider on a hot summers day if you’re not a beer drinker, or even if you are for that matter!

Local tip: try a couple of the great tapas dishes to enhance your beer.

3. The Rails

The Rails is what the locals affectionately call The Railway Hotel. The best thing about it is that the railway stopped coming through town about fifteen years ago, but we so loved our local pub that it’s remained open for business. There is a beer garden that spills out onto the car park, plus a cute little public bar that still sits on the dysfunctional railway platform. There is nothing flash here, but it has some great local characters and indeed is a character in itself.

Local tip: awesome free music gigs.

4. The Balcony

Like many of the cool bars, there is a history with this old building; it is one of the few historical buildings in use in Byron Bay from the 1930’s (yes – that is old to us). One of the best things about this bar is that you sit up high, one story above street level – and let’s face it, that is high-rise in Byron Bay! So you get the best people watching position in town.

Local tip: I know this is about drinking beer or cider, but just quietly, these guys do a delicious cocktail; highly recommended is the Lychee Martini.

5. The Northern Hotel

Short for The Great Northern Hotel. This is home to the locally brewed Stone & Wood ale. The Northern is a great hang out in the centre of town, any time of the day or night. A great place to kick off your first beers of the day on the sidewalk, or in the front bar that opens onto the sidewalk. This pub is what Australia is famous for when it comes to great “counter meals”, lunch and dinner ordered at the bar at a reasonable price. Loads of free entertainment and gigs every night of the week. This bar is located a stones throw away from Nomads Byron Bay.

Local tip: the Northern is a first class music venue that showcases top notch International gigs, tickets available on site. It is a bit of a secret squirrel in town, but you can get your fill of world music right here in little old Byron Bay!
