Looking for a trip around the Whitsunday Islands? Then they don't get much more inclusive than Summertime! I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to have a sneak peak of this 3 day / 2 night sailing adventure as a day trip so the crew could show myself and other Airlie Beach travel agents what we'd been missing out on all this time!
We met at Abel Point Marina at 9am, and were briefed for what lay ahead of us for the day. The weather was looking gloomy, and I was hesitant to travel out as I generally suffer from severe sea sickness! But, by the time we were out of the Marina, the skies had already begun to clear, and the day was turning into beautiful weather for sailing!
After a safety briefing with the crew we all got to help out with putting up the sails, laughing and carrying on as we slid around as the waves crashed over the deck. The day was a little windy, but Summertime was prepared for it! She is an absolute beautiful vessel that can take out 16 guests for its 3 day/ 2 night sailing trip.
She also has a hot tub, and kayaks on board so you really get a taste of luxury. Downstairs is just as nice, with air conditioning to keep you cool (and help out with the sea sickness), and very spacious with a big screen TV, a common area, and the sleeping quarters.
During the morning, we all sat up on deck enjoying the beautiful sunshine and laughing at one another as we each tried to help sail. It took us about an hour and a half to get out to the northern end of Hook Island, where we would be spending our day.
When we arrived, the crew put the kayaks into the water and asked us to partner up. It was still a bit windy even though we were in a sheltered area, and it was going to be rough going to get to the cove where we would look for sting rays and enjoy the beautiful views.
I partnered up with one of my friends and we paddled off around the corner, eagerly looking for turtles and fish in the water.
We both had our snorkel sets ready to dip into the water if we had to, and were excited to find some sting rays. When we arrived at the cove, we pulled the kayaks up onto shore and waded through the water where we got up close and personal with heaps of baby sting rays who were confident enough to swim around our feet. We spent about an hour wading around in the shallows, climbing rocks and having a bit of a snorkel before the crew announced that lunch was almost ready, we were all a bit hungry by this stage and eager to get back to the boat to have some lunch.
When we boarded again, Brad and Bri (the owners) had made us a delicious lunch of homemade pizzas and Caesar salad. It's safe to say that there was no food left to take home. It was absolutely incredible! Even with my sea sickness I couldn't turn it down!
By this time, the hot tub had warmed up, the champagne was flowing, and it was the best place to be after being in the cool water. We relaxed after lunch, enjoyed the sunshine and the views from the hot tub, and slowly made our way back to shore again.
This was special trip that Brad and Bri had organised for us and so we only saw a small part of what guests normally experience on a 3 day 2 night trip on Summertime. Usually Summertime heads out to Whitehaven Beach and spends a lot of time sailing around the beautiful Whitsunday Islands with the opportunity to dive as well, however just on a our day trip I fell in love with the boat and the crew! This was one of the best days I've spent sailing around the Whitsunday Islands, and can't wait until I can do the full 3 day / 2 night tour with Summertime, and Brad and Bri!
